The Virgin Birth

Isaiah 7:14 Therefore the Lord himself shall give you a sign; behold, a virgin shall conceive, and bear a son, and shall call his name Immanuel.

Immanuel means God is with us.  Jesus was born of a virgin whose name was Mary.  You know that, but do you realize the importance of the virgin birth and that without the virgin birth, salvation would not be available?  Mary conceived when the Holy Spirit came upon her.  Mary was wondering and asked, “How can I get pregnant?  I have never been with a man.”  That was a good question because without a man, this was impossible.  Then, Gabriel gave her the answer she was not expecting.  The answer was that the Holy Ghost, the third person of the Godhead, would cause her to be miraculously pregnant with the Son of God.  We can’t figure that out in our minds.  That is why we, too, need the Holy Ghost to reveal this truth to our hearts.  If it wasn’t this way, then, we are not saved.  Jesus had to be a man yet remain clean without the sin and separation that existed between God and man.

The Lord clearly told Adam, Eve, the devil, and us what He was going to do to fix the colossal mistake Adam and Eve had just made.  Genesis 3:15 says, “And I will put enmity between thee and the woman, and between thy seed and her seed; it shall bruise thy head, and thou shalt bruise his heel.”  On the day Jesus was born in a manger in Bethlehem, this Word from God was beginning to be fulfilled.  Jesus was born of a virgin, all God and all man, and He was about to put the devil under His feet, and, therefore, under everyone’s feet who are in Christ.  The virgin birth also ensures us that the blood Jesus would spill for us was pure because Jesus was the spotless lamb, slain from the foundations of the world.  The Word of God became flesh, and that flesh was crucified on a cross so we could be made righteous.  Thank God for the virgin birth, for the spotless blood of the Lamb.

As you celebrate Christmas, be sure and remember that this special season is to honor the Holy One who was born of the virgin and because of that birth, you are born again.
